A “Domain of One’s Own”
Empowering individuals to shape their own online presence
Content & learning objectives
Beginning at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) , the idea behind ‘a domain of one’s own’ is essentially based on the idea of encouraging people to own their own web ‘domain’ (ie a web address based on their name, or some other chosen self-identity/label) and learn how to manage a basic website, improving their skills and confidence in the process, as well as understanding a lot more about how the web works, rather than being simply a passive consumer of web technologies and services provided by corporations and other organisations.
The idea has grown and a spin-out company (Reclaim Hosting) how offers this as a service at a low cost to individuals, groups and institutions, but of course a domain can be purchased or hosted anywhere, it’s not exclusive to this company, although they provide a smooth introduction to the technology and the set-up process. Many other universities now use this as an alternative/supplement to traditional digital literacies approaches.
